IN LIEU OF A FIRST VALENTINE POEM
for Beverly
If I say "I love you" could I
love you more than I can say?
If I love you, can I love you
more than I do today?
If I hold you, can I touch
you deeper than I hold you?
If I touch you, could my touch
be truer than ocean blue?
If I kiss you, could my kiss
be more expressive than the rising sun?
Blossom, dearest angel, if I
come to you without warning
could I stay longer than if
you knew me from a bud?
If I say I love you
could I mean more love. . . .
Then I would deeply hold you
and part the curtain of ten
thousand forgettable (and forgotten) days.
