Lonely Inside A Rabbit Hole

Those haughty sparrows
are chirping again, as if they really
had something to crow about.

And they have. Those stupid birds
can't see the terrible hash
us humans have got ourselves in.

They're nearsighted, and have
a ball rolling in the sky all daze,
or sipping the sunlight
from the highest branchings
of the walnut trees. And those trees:
they're filled with amusement.

They light up at the sound of the sun
like a pinball machine. They
cannot tell what loneliness is
for a human being.

The sky tells the story: vast, empty and blue,
as sparrows and jets cancel through.
